Logistics & Supply Chain

Brivio & Viganò

The efficiency of the food supply chain, even in times of emergency

Use Case

The Company

With over 650 clients, 145,000 square meters of managed warehouses, and a proprietary fleet of more than 700 vehicles, Brivio & Viganò is one of Italy’s leading players in food distribution and integrated logistics. This 3PL provider operates across numerous platforms, including five owned facilities located in Italy and Spain, offering turnkey solutions that enable retailers and industry operators to maximize supply chain efficiency.
The logistics hub in Pozzuolo Martesana, on the outskirts of Milan, was launched in mid-2018 and spans a total area of 23,150 square meters. It is equipped with next-generation storage cells with variable temperatures ranging from negative (-25 °C) to positive. It is dedicated 55% to the frozen food segment and 45% to fresh products. With a total of 31,000 pallet positions and 50 loading docks, the warehouse relies on Generix Supply Chain Hub – WMS to manage the processes for all references.

In our decision, three features of Generix’s WMS proved essential: the availability of the platform as a SaaS service, multi-client management, and the breadth of functional coverage. Generix’s more than thirty years of experience in the logistics and food distribution solutions market was also decisive: for us, such a solid and long-standing experience represents a highly valuable asset and a guarantee of reliability.

The Generix solution

Availability of the Platform as a SaaS Service

The availability in SaaS mode ensures reduced implementation times.

Multi-Client Management

Multi-client management is made possible by the variety of business models offered by the solution.

Breadth of Functional Coverage

The breadth of the solution’s functional coverage and its robust base configuration, extendable through specific developments tailored to clients’ needs.

Essential Criterion for Brivio & Viganò in Selecting a Warehouse Management Software for the new logistics hub was maximum flexibility. This required the ability to quickly onboard new clients, handle a wide variety of processes, and respond promptly to specific requests.

During the selection process, three key features of Generix’s WMS proved to be critical:

  • The availability of the platform as a SaaS service (Software as a Service), which significantly reduced the average implementation time for a WMS solution. This enabled Brivio & Viganò to integrate new clients’ goods into the warehouse in just two weeks for smaller businesses and approximately a month and a half for those with more complex operations. Two years after its launch, the site is already managing 12 clients, including two of the leading retail chains and some of the most recognized brands, even internationally, in the confectionery sector. The SaaS model also provides scalability and cost flexibility advantages, thanks to usage-based pricing tied to processed volumes.
  • Multi-client management, made possible by the variety of activity models offered by the solution. For example, it is possible to customize modes of reception for each client (using DESADV, EAN128, EAN 13/14, item selection), stock management (storage rules, automatic blocking after the expiration of the sell-by period, multi-criteria inventory management), and goods preparation (in full pallets, layers, packages, with static or dynamic picking management). The ability to define distinct management by area, aisle, or site allows the information flows of each client to be handled separately and independently, eliminating any risk of overlap. Different visibility profiles can also be configured for clients/users (e.g., some users can only access specific clients’ data). The system also allows multi-client shipments to be created when needed, optimizing vehicle load capacity.
  • The breadth of the solution’s functional coverage and its robust base configuration, which can be further extended through specific developments tailored to client needs. For instance, a development was carried out to assign an internal lot code specific to the client or to verify the correctness of the EAN13 code during pallet creation.

To complete the project, the adoption of Generix Supply Chain Hub – TradeXpress allowed the integration of incoming flows in their original formats, without requiring Brivio & Viganò’s clients to convert files. The same technology was also used to provide outgoing flow files in formats required by clients.

When selecting their 3PL provider, Generix’s 20+ years of experience in the food distribution and logistics services sector, with numerous references in both domestic and international markets, was a significant deciding factor.

The Project in Detail

What does it mean for a 3PL specializing in food distribution and integrated logistics to guarantee a level of service excellence? Brivio&Viganò discuss this in a video, where they explain how, in the Pozzuolo Martesana logistics hub, they manage over 23,000 m² in temperature-controlled environments (from -25 °C to +4 °C) using the Generix WMS warehouse management software.
